A commitment to research rooted in local communities:
In contrast to “parachute science” approaches, the research conducted by Nature Conserv’Action draws on local knowledge, whose value and strength it recognizes. It is rooted in local communities and directly benefits residents while strengthening biodiversity conservation. Our projects combine basic and applied research within an open and collaborative scientific framework, guided by on-the-ground realities and the observation of biodiversity and ecosystems. We reconnect experimental and laboratory approaches with natural history observations and field research.
OUR METHODS AND ACTIONS
Scientific Co-Production: Connecting Communities and Local Research
We connect local communities and researchers to collaboratively produce participatory science. Traditional knowledge inspires research, protocols are adapted to encourage participation, and communities become active participants in the research. We also integrate these participatory approaches into academic training by involving young researchers. We promote participatory science using recognized platforms such as iNaturalist.
Describing little-known and threatened biodiversity: Taxonomy and Systematics
In the biodiversity hotspots where we work with local communities, a large proportion of the species present have yet to be described. This is an essential step toward ensuring their conservation, securing their international recognition, and highlighting the unique and threatened biodiversity of these areas. Our taxonomic research, conducted from the forests to the laboratories, enables us to describe new species discovered by local residents and communities.
New Technologies to address scientific research challenges in conservation
In remote and hard-to-reach areas, drones, camera traps, environmental DNA, and thermal and moisture sensors are all tools used to collect scientific data. Our expertise enables us to apply these methods in the context of research dedicated to community-based conservation.
Understanding the effects of global change to Inform conservation efforts
Habitat loss and fragmentation, combined with climate change, threaten biodiversity. Through ecological research projects that combine fieldwork and experimental methods, we study the impacts of these global changes on biodiversity in order to guide the conservation efforts we support.
Understanding the connections between humans and nature to inform awareness-raising efforts
We contribute to research projects at the intersection of ecological science and the social sciences, with the aim of better understanding how humans perceive different groups of animals and how our outreach efforts influence those perceptions. Our findings help improve educational and outreach approaches, particularly for mitigating human-wildlife conflicts and promoting strategies that foster coexistence.
